Keytrade Review for Belgian Investors

📅 Last updated: 8 May 2026
 ·  🏷 Topic: Keytrade Bank, broker review
 ·  🇧🇪 For: Belgian retail investors

Keytrade Bank is a Belgian online bank-broker, since 2016 the Belgian branch of Arkéa Direct Bank SA (France), itself a subsidiary of the Crédit Mutuel Arkéa group. For Belgian investors a popular alternative to Bolero — comparable pricing, different banking relationship.

Key facts

  • Type: Belgian online bank
  • Regulation: ACPR (France, prudential) + FSMA + NBB (Belgium, conduct) — Keytrade operates as a branch of a French institution; the French ACPR is the primary prudential supervisor.
  • Owner: Arkéa Direct Bank SA (France), Crédit Mutuel Arkéa group, since 2016
  • Protection scheme: French FGDR — €100,000 for deposits and €70,000 for financial instruments. Keytrade is a Belgian branch of Arkéa Direct Bank SA (France), so the French scheme applies, not the Belgian one. €20,000 is the EU minimum under directive 97/9/EC and is therefore €50,000 too low here.
  • Interface: NL + FR + EN
  • Mobile app: yes
  • Markets: Euronext, Xetra, London, NYSE, Nasdaq

Fee structure

Since 22 January 2025: typically €5.95 per Euronext order in the €250–€2,500 range. Sliding scale: €2.45 for orders up to €250; €14.95 for €2,500–€10,000; +€7.50 per additional €10,000 block above €10,000.

ETFs: as of May 2026, no standing fee-free ETF programme is documented at Keytrade. ETFs are priced at the same rate as stocks. Verify keytradebank.be directly for any current promotions.

Tax handling

Status
TOB ✅ Automatic
30% withholding tax (roerende voorheffing) ✅ Automatic
Belgian tax certificate ✅ Complete
New 2026 capital gains tax ✅ Automatic withholding from 1 June 2026 (opt-in default). Opt-out: Keytrade deadline 31 May 2026; statutory deadline 31 August 2026. Note: Keytrade does not apply the €10,000 annual exemption at source — reclaim via tax return.

No NBB declaration required.

Strengths

  • Fully Belgian tax handling — like Bolero/MeDirect.
  • NL/FR/EN interface — convenient for expats.
  • Independent of KBC — for those who don’t want all finances at one bank.
  • Standard banking features — current account, savings account, mortgage all possible.

Weaknesses

  • Not the cheapest — comparable to Bolero, higher than DEGIRO.
  • More limited international market access than Saxo or IBKR.

Who is it suitable for?

  • ✅ Not a KBC customer but wants a Belgian broker
  • ✅ English-speaking expats who want NL/FR/EN
  • ✅ Wants one institution for current account + investing + savings products
  • ✅ Trades 1-2 times per month

Independence?

A nuance: since 2016 Keytrade has been the Belgian branch of Arkéa Direct Bank SA, a subsidiary of the French cooperative banking group Crédit Mutuel Arkéa. In some communications Keytrade is presented as “independent” which strictly speaking is not accurate. Operationally Keytrade does work autonomously in Belgium with a Belgian FSMA licence.

Comparison

Bolero Keytrade MeDirect
Ownership structure KBC Crédit Mutuel Arkéa (FR) Banka Creditas (CZ) via MeDirect Malta
Belgian FSMA ✅ ✅ ✅
Fee €1,000 ETF ~€5.00 (or €2.50 recurring via ETF Playlist) ~€5.95 Often free on ETF list
Interface NL+FR NL+FR+EN NL+FR+EN
ETF offering Standard Standard Strong ETF focus

💡 For those who don’t bank with KBC but do want Belgian tax convenience: Keytrade is a logical choice. Fees and service comparable to Bolero, different banking group.

Investor protection: what the FGDR actually covers

Because Keytrade is a branch of a French institution, your money sits under the French Fonds de Garantie des Dépôts et de Résolution (FGDR) rather than the Belgian guarantee scheme. Concretely:

  • €100,000 per person on deposits (cash).
  • €70,000 per person on financial instruments, where the institution can no longer meet its obligations to clients.

An easily missed consequence: Arkéa Direct Bank operates under two trade names — Fortuneo and Keytrade Bank. Hold accounts at both and you share a single €100,000 deposit cap across them; you do not get one each. Anyone deliberately spreading money across institutions to stay under the cap must count Fortuneo and Keytrade as one.

Note that a guarantee is not the same as ownership: your securities are held in custody in your name and remain yours. The fund only comes into play if securities that should be there are missing — not when your portfolio falls in value.

Opening an account, step by step

  1. Online application with your ID card and itsme or a card reader.
  2. Investor profile (MiFID II) — a legally required questionnaire on knowledge, experience, financial situation and risk appetite. The resulting profile determines which products you may trade, so answer honestly rather than for maximum access.
  3. First deposit from a bank account in your own name.
  4. Set your tax choices. This is the step most investors skip: decide deliberately whether to keep the automatic capital-gains withholding or opt out. Keytrade applies its own deadline, which is stricter than the statutory one.

Worked example: what you pay per year

The tariff is tiered, so order size drives the cost per trade heavily. Two scenarios, each investing €2,400 a year:

  • €200 per month — every order falls in the up-to-€250 tier: 12 × €2.45 = €29.40 per year.
  • €600 per quarter — every order falls in the €250–€2,500 tier: 4 × €5.95 = €23.80 per year.

Buying less often and in larger amounts is cheaper under a tiered tariff — the opposite of what many investors assume. On top of that comes stock-exchange tax, which depends on the fund rather than the broker: 0.12% for most distributing ETFs, 1.32% for accumulating ETFs on the FSMA list. On €2,400 a year that is €2.88 against €31.68 — again a bigger gap than the commission itself.

Frequently asked questions

Is my money at Keytrade protected under the Belgian or French scheme?

French. Keytrade is a Belgian branch of Arkéa Direct Bank SA, so the French FGDR covers €100,000 of deposits and €70,000 of financial instruments — more generous than the €20,000 EU minimum some other countries apply.

Why does Keytrade withhold 10% when I have a €10,000 exemption?

The withholding is applied to the realised gain itself; the annual €10,000 exemption is not applied at source. You reclaim the excess through your tax return. This is how the regime works, not a Keytrade quirk.

Do I need to declare my Keytrade account to the Central Contact Point?

No. Keytrade is established in Belgium and reports to the CAP itself. That obligation applies to accounts at foreign institutions, such as Trade Republic or DEGIRO.

Are ETFs free at Keytrade?

No. As of May 2026 there is no documented commission-free ETF list; ETFs trade at the same tariff as shares. Check keytradebank.be for current promotions.
