· 🇧🇪 For: Belgian investors
On your annual Belgian personal income tax return, you as an investor must declare specific information. Which codes and boxes? Here is the overview.
Box VII — Investment income
Here you report dividends, interest on bonds, and related income.
| Code | What |
|---|---|
| 1437/2437 | The amount of withholding tax (roerende voorheffing) you reclaim (capped at €833 of dividends per person per year — gives back a maximum of €249.90 at 30% withholding tax; for REIT (GVV/SIR) dividends where 15% withholding tax applied — note the reduced rate currently applies only to Care Property Invest; Aedifica and Cofinimmo distributions are taxed at 30% — this is capped at €124.95). Applies to “ordinary” dividends under art. 18 CIR92/WIB92. |
| 1444/2444 | Income without Belgian withholding tax — foreign equity dividends where no Belgian broker withheld the tax, and distributions from Reynders-scope bond or mixed funds received without prior Belgian withholding. All such income is taxable at 30%. |
In practice for most investors:
– With a Belgian broker (Bolero/Keytrade/MeDirect): typically not much work — all Belgian dividends are already withheld automatically. You use code 1437/2437 to reclaim the €833 exemption.
– With a foreign broker (DEGIRO/Saxo/IBKR/Trade Republic): more work — you must inventory all foreign dividends AND distributions from Reynders-scope bond / mixed funds received without prior Belgian withholding, and report them under code 1444/2444.
Box XIII — Foreign accounts and individual life insurance policies abroad
Here you report foreign accounts and foreign investments.
Section A — Foreign accounts (code 1075-89):
- Do you have a foreign securities account (DEGIRO, Saxo, IBKR, Trade Republic)?
- Do you have a foreign cash account (Flatex with DEGIRO, Saxo cash, etc.)?
- Do you have a foreign savings account?
→ Tick “yes”, state the surname and first name of the account holder + country where the account is held.
Section B — Individual life insurance policies abroad (code 1076):
- Do you have a foreign life insurance or investment-linked insurance policy?
Condition: the account must first have been registered, one time, with the NBB CAP (Central Point of Contact). See NBB-aangifte doen(NL).
Capital gains tax box (since 2026)
Per implementing decree (expected during 2026), a specific box/code will be introduced for the new capital gains tax. In practice:
- Belgian broker: automatic withholding from 1 June 2026. You typically don’t need to do anything unless you opt out.
- Foreign broker: you must calculate and declare your net capital gain yourself. Step-up cost basis: the default = market value on 31 December 2025. You may use the actual historical purchase price only if it is higher than the value on 31 December 2025 (to lower your taxable capital gain) — this choice can be made until 31 December 2030.
- Annual exemption: €10,000 per taxpayer per year (AY 2027 / IY 2026). Unused allowance carries forward up to €1,000/year, capped at €5,000, with a total maximum of €15,000 after 5 years.
Box X (expenses) — Possibly relevant for self-employed
Professional investment expenses (for those who carry out investment activity as a profession) — exceptional, not for most retail investors.
Practical tips
1. Gather your documents before you start:
– Bolero/Keytrade/MeDirect: download your Belgian tax certificate (fiscaal attest) from their platform.
– DEGIRO: annual overview (in Dutch, you have to convert it yourself).
– Saxo: Annual Report (in English, same idea).
– Foreign banks: bank statements + dividend overviews.
2. Calculate your TOB declaration if you trade via Trade Republic or IBKR:
– Tools such as tobcalc.com help automate this.
– Filing via MyMinfin → My declaration → Miscellaneous Taxes → TOB.
– Deadline: last working day of the second month following the transaction.
3. €833 dividend exemption claim (code 1437/2437):
– Applies to net dividends from Belgian shares.
– Per person — for married couples together up to €1,666.
– Also applies to dividends from REITs (GVV/SIR — Belgian real estate funds).
4. When in doubt:
– Consult an accountant or tax adviser — for those whose situation is complex or international, a professional is often worth the cost.
– FPS Finance Tax-on-Web has a chatbot and helpdesk.
Deadlines
- Tax-on-Web (online): 15 July 2026.
- Paper return: 30 June 2026.
- Extension option: limited — request in time.
💡 The threshold for a “difficult return” for investors lies with those who have more than 1 foreign account or generate complex income. For most beginners with 1-2 ETFs at a Belgian broker: 15 minutes of extra work in July.

Frequently asked questions
Which code do I use to reclaim the €833 dividend exemption?
Code 1437/2437 in box VII. The exemption applies to net dividends from Belgian shares, per person — for married couples together up to €1,666. At 30 % withholding tax you get back a maximum of €249.90. It also applies to dividends from REITs (GVV/SIR).
Does the €833 exemption also apply to ETF and fund dividends?
No. Dividends from ETFs, ICBs or investment funds are explicitly excluded from the exemption (art. 21, first paragraph, 14° CIR92/WIB92). The exemption under code 1437/2437 applies only to “ordinary” dividends under art. 18 CIR92/WIB92.
Does the reduced 15 % withholding tax rate still apply to Aedifica and Cofinimmo?
No. The reduced rate currently applies only to Care Property Invest. Aedifica and Cofinimmo distributions are taxed at 30 %. For REIT (GVV/SIR) dividends where 15 % withholding tax applied, the reclaim via code 1437/2437 is capped at €124.95.
Which code do I use for foreign dividends without Belgian withholding?
Code 1444/2444 in box VII. There you report foreign dividends where no Belgian broker withheld the tax, and distributions from Reynders-scope bond or mixed funds received without prior Belgian withholding. All income is taxable at 30 % without prior Belgian withholding.
In which box do I declare my DEGIRO or Saxo account?
In box XIII Section A, code 1075-89. Tick “yes” and state the surname and first name of the account holder plus the country where the account is held. This covers foreign securities accounts, cash accounts (such as Flatex with DEGIRO) and savings accounts. The account must first have been registered, one time, with the NBB CAP.
How does the step-up cost basis for capital gains tax work at a foreign broker?
The default cost basis is the market value on 31 December 2025. You may use the actual historical purchase price only if it is higher than the value on 31 December 2025, to lower your taxable capital gain. This choice can be made until 31 December 2030. At a Belgian broker, withholding is automatic from 1 June 2026.
What is the deadline for Tax-on-Web?
The online return via Tax-on-Web must be filed by 15 July 2026. The paper return is due by 30 June 2026. An extension is possible but limited — request it in time.
